A number of cities and states started to mark the day “The King’s Holiday” in 1971, just after 3 years of his death. This date was dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. and honored as the American federal holiday in 1986. He was born on Monday, 15th January 1929 in Atlanta. He was a Christian minister and activist who conducted groundbreaking civil rights movement. He gave courage to African Americans to stand against injustice. He managed the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and Black people took a stand against ethnic discrimination. Black people rejected to leave their seats for white people. This campaign took at least one year and flashed after the arrest of Rosa Parks due to she rejected to leave her seat.

King conducted a number of peaceful protests and marches. He supported to conduct the 1963 March on Washington. A large number of streets in the U.S have been dedicated to his honor, including a country name in Washington State. The major focus of King was changed during the final years of his life. He included a resistance against poverty and the Vietnam War. He was assassinated at age 39, but his life and work are remembered today. So, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day has become a part of American federal holiday. King was planning a national occupation of Washington, but he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on 4th April 1968. His death initiated protests in various cities in the United States. He was shot dead by a single bullet fired by James Earl Ray. The shooter was sentenced to 99 years in prison and died in prison in 1998 at the age 70.
