Volvo showed that their latest development in their Drive Me project is the complete system of self- driven cars which would be driving on high way and heavy traffic without a driver.

Volvo is expected to succeed this and it would be proven once they would be releasing 100 self-driving vehicles which would initially be taking route oin selected roads only surrounding Gothenburg — Sweden’s second largest city — by 2017, the company said.

Self DrivingThe complete project is majorly a joint effort. The legislators of Volvo along with thei transport authorities and city officials would be looking forward to a much easier and crash-free future with these self driven cars.

He semnior vice president of the research department, Peter Mertens stated that; “Autonomous driving will fundamentally change the way we look at driving. In the future, you will be able to choose between autonomous and active driving. “

Also stating; “This transforms everyday commuting from lost time to quality time, opening up new opportunities for work and pleasure.”

The Other 1 Percent

The self driving system is not being put up by Volvo only but Mercedes and Audi are also trying their luck on this thing, we announced this year. Volvo says that we still need time to have things done in the right way before we can risk being on the roads..

There are systems that have proven their reliability to be 99 percent practically but that are not enough for a company like Volvo. The automated systems need to handle things  in a much better way and in a certainly good environment when it comes to automatically driven vehicles on the road and among living human beings to put at risk incase of fault.

Volvo has shown a Drive Me solution which would show that a holistic sensor can bring in a direct position which would show that the vehicle is at what state by its surroundings on a whole. The radar and camera unit of the windshields would be able to interpret traffic signs and take on with the ups and downs of the road. It would also be able to show the details regarding the different things on the road like speed breakers, etc.

Ordinary People

The approach of Volvo is different from the independent driving which comes with the handling of regular driven cars and these vehicles to be actually on street with the normal flow of traffic. Things are expected to be different in future.

It was told by Juliussen to techNewsWorld regarding the weather conditions that, “they’re also testing this in winter conditions instead of the ideal weather of California.”

He explained that, “what Volvo is doing is trying to get the cars on the road, which is where you will find out what technical problems you’re going to face. You are only going to find these problems if you test, and you may need to try this in different areas.”

Chandraseker said that it is important that there should be drivers sitting within the car to take control incase something goes wrong.

He also stated, “Volvo is also working with traffic control in the city, and finally, Volvo has really focused on developing vehicle infrastructure that can read traffic lights [and] road signs, and input all that information to ensure the car is safe on the road.”

The Road Ahead

The vehicles are going to be equipped by advanced sensors which would be giving out the efforts for the autonomous drivers. The management of the compatible infrastructure would be those which would be inclusive of the roads and of the traffic control accordingly. These vehicles would in the beginning be able to handle parking and slow driving tactics only but in the next stage they would be given flow to other roads as well.

According to Chandrasekar “Communication with the traffic control center is going to be important, and Volvo is working on this, because the car needs to know what is ahead and down the road a mile or two — not just what is immediately around it.” He also said “This is why the high-definition maps are so important.”

The handling of Volvo with the Drive Me cars would expect to hit the roads by 2017 which would be able to apply to the goals that would also give details for the autonomous driving techniques in the right way.
