A large number of users of popular messaging service “WhatsApp” reported that they received a download offer for “WhatsApp Gold”. All users claimed that the users downloaded this new “Premium Service” were able in getting some extra features including new emojis and video calling. Point to be noted that most of the users clicked on the given link were not directed to the official website of WhatsApp. This provided link directed them to an unrelated website address and they were advised to download a malevolent piece of software called “WhatsApp Gold”. The users of WhatsApp also reported that there was an increase in the offer to download WhatsApp Gold in the month of May 2016. It is important that a similar scam also circulated called “WhatsApp Plus” and the company described the WhatsApp Plus in its FAQ section.

The company indicated that WhatsApp Plus is an application, but it was not developed by WhatsApp and it is not associated to the company. The company also confirmed that there is not any kind of relation of WhatsApp Plus developers with WhatsApp. They further mentioned that the company doesn’t support WhatsApp Plus. The company indicated that WhatsApp Plus contains harmful source code and WhatsApp will not provide any guarantee for the safety of user’s personal and private information. Their information can be passed to 3^rd parties with their authorization and knowledge. The company advised to users to avoid such kinds of scams and download apps from authentic source such as Google play or from the company’s specific website.
