Trump has Terminated Jeff Sessions and appointed Matthew Whitaker

The U.S President Donald Trump has thrown away the attorney general Jeff Sessions. It is first cabinet clean-out from Trump following the U.S midterm elections. The midterm elections held on Tuesday and Republicans found losing control in the U.S House of Representatives. Sessions said that he had been asked to resign from his post, and he did it. He said in his letter, “Dear Mr. President, at your request I am submitting my resignation”. The U.S president Trump replaced Sessions with his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker. He will be appointed as the acting attorney general. It initiates a wave of fears that Trump is starting to eliminate the investigation being carried out by special counsel Robert Mueller.

It is important that Mueller was appointed to handle the investigation over alleged Russian interruption in the U.S presidential elections 2016. The investigation was initiated after the termination of FBI Director James Comey to find possible links between Donald Trump campaign and Russian government officials. Sessions already triggered controversy regarding his inability to acknowledge his meeting took place with Russian officials. Sessions was one of those members in the U.S Senate supported Trump’s bid for the White House.

Sessions also shared similar views on immigration and other issues. Trump frequently criticized him and the Department of Justice on social media. It generated speculation the Sessions or Rosenstein, or both will be terminated. Newly elected Democrats also warned Trump not to take such measures. The senior Democrat in the U.S Senate, Chuck Schumer said that the president will trigger a constitutional crisis after trying to shake the independent probe. The new speaker in the U.S House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi said that the termination of Sessions is considered an aggressive attempt from Trump finish the work of former FBI director.
