Singapore has been selected by the U.S and North Korea as a meeting place for a historic summit between the U.S President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. If we talk about embassies of both countries in the city, it represents the discrepancy of wealth and power between them. The comparison between embassies of both countries might not be wider. The U.S embassy is located in a complex constructed with 30 million U.S dollars in a large garden in a most exclusive diplomatic area in Singapore. It’s surrounded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, the Australian High Commission, the British High Commission, and the embassy of China. The embassy building consists of a reflecting pool, landscaped pillars. Minnesota granite and Vermont marble were used as the material. The U.S embassy has brought together almost all of the functions in Singapore. The U.S embassy website has indicated that relations of United States with the city-state go back to 1836.

North Korea's Diplomatic Footprint in Singapore

It was the time when Joseph Balestier was appointed as the first consul general of the United States. North Korea established an embassy in Singapore after establishing diplomatic relations in 1975. Ambassador Kim Chol Nam operates the North Korean embassy functions on the 15th floor of the High Street Centre. It is located opposite side of the Parliament House of Singapore. The NK embassy has 8-representatives and spouses registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore, compared with at least 100 representatives from the U.S. The tower is located in a high-status area and the building itself was completed at least half a century ago. The NKNews (a news portal focused on North Korea) reported that the embassy moved to its current location in 2016. It is a 7,500-square-foot house located at 60 Joo Chiat Lane in the East Coast of Singapore between the city and Changi Airport.
