The Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz said the U.S President Donald Trump’s response to disastrous hurricanes in Puerto Rico cost the lives of more than 3,000 Americans. She also warned the president’s efforts in the widespread coronavirus would have a similar result. On Tuesday, Cruz wrote in a tweet and said, “The president’s botched efforts after Hurricanes Irma and Maria cost the lives of approximately 3,000 Puerto Ricans. He then put the debt before the dead. He is doing it again with his botched efforts in handling the Covid-19 crisis and again it will cost thousands of lives”. The mayor has become a prominent critic of the president during Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria.

Cruz also lashed out at the White House in desperate pleas for aid as most of the island was left without power and critical resources for months. At least 3,000 deaths have been linked with the hurricane. She also informed CNN that Trump’s administration killed the Puerto Ricans with neglect. She said, “The Trump administration led us to believe they were helping when they weren’t up to par, and they didn’t allow other countries to help us, shame on President Trump. Shame on President Trump for not even once, not even yesterday, just saying, Look, I grieve with the people of Puerto Rico”.

It is noteworthy that Trump has also celebrated his administration’s victory about widespread coronavirus. He formerly said White House had a total control of the novel virus. But the U.S health officials have warned it is spreading throughout the country rapidly. In the mid-March, the President declared a national emergency following the deadly virus Covid-19, in spite of the U.S confirmed its first official coronavirus case on 20th January 2020. The administration also experienced significant issues in rolling out nationwide testing. The health experts have said those initial weeks could have been a critical window for the United States to save countless lives.
