US President Donald Trump didn’t take a position after the death of George Floyd on whether 4 former Minneapolis police officers should be prosecuted. He said he and Vice President Mike Pence will get a full report on the incident on Thursday. On Wednesday, the president was talking with reporters travelling with him and called it a sad day. Trump travelled to join a SpaceX rocket launch of 2 NASA astronauts into space in Florida, but it delayed at the last minute until Saturday. He is slated to receive a very full report on the matter the next day. A reporter asked during travelling that if he thinks the 4 fired officers should be prosecuted, but Trump just said his administration will look at it.

Point to be noted that Trump has referred to himself in the past as the country’s top law enforcement officer. The former chief executives have given that role to their attorneys general, designed to stay out of criminal matters to prevent politicizing them. Trump frequently informed reporters that he has the power to intervene in any criminal case being prosecuted or investigated by the Justice Department. His current Attorney General, William Barr has done little to dissuade his boss. Barr also said Trump’s threats to intervene make it hard for him to do his job.

Floyd was black and died in hospital on Monday after officers arrested him and one kneeled on his neck. It is noteworthy that the Minneapolis Police Department later confirmed that 4 officers have been terminated after the national condemnation of their actions. Those actions were seen in one viral video and soon played over and over on cable news and various social media sites. Another video also went viral showing Floyd’s final moments. It contradicts a Minneapolis police statement that suggested Floyd had resisted the arrest. So, police officers forced him to the ground and he eventually lost his breath.
